Sustainable Sofas
Cotton, wool and eco-velvet are our three fabric options with sustainability at their core. All three fabrics are 100% recycled and GRS certified, which means emissions were greatly reduced during the production process. Our eco-velvet is made from extracts of recycled plastic bottles that were headed for landfill or our oceans. Every one metre of fabric is made from thirty 550ml bottles, in short: a Model 04 is made from 300 plastic bottles. Our wool has recycled yarns that come from the waste produced in production and from any clothes that can't be re-sold. The yarns are hand separated by colour - so no extra dye chemicals are needed or used. Made in Spain, our 100% recycled cotton uses plant-based stain repellent technology to repel water.

What makes a furniture sustainable?
Sustainability refers to how the furniture is made – and whether it’s done in an environmentally friendly way. Materials are usually focused on being sourced in a renewable or sustainable way. For example, at Swyft we have three fabrics that have been 100% recycled, we use these fabrics on our Made to Order sofas.
Sustainability not only factors in minimising waste, energy consumption, and reduced carbon emissions, but also taking into account the product’s longevity. The furniture is built in a way which reduces the need for it to be replaced further down the line. Using finishes that are plant-based or don’t have negative impacts on the environment also feeds into what makes furniture sustainable.

What makes a sofa eco-friendly?
An eco-friendly sofa follows the same principles as sustainable furniture. A sustainable sofa uses FSC-certified woods to build the frame; FSC is a certification that aims to limit deforestation by only using wood from sustainable sources. Eco-friendly sofas also have a focus on longevity – at Swyft, we offer a 15 year frame guarantee because our frames are hand built and we know our sofas will last.A sustainable sofa will also come with recycled fabrics or fabrics that naturally have less of a negative environmental impact, like organic cotton or wool and hemp. -
Which fabric is most environmentally friendly?
All recycled fabrics are environmentally friendly – our fabrics that are made from recycled materials are wool, eco-velvet and cotton. The fabrics come from recycled clothes or plastics from bottles. Linen is also made from flax plant which requires fewer pesticides than other materials; it’s also biodegradable.
